In Clark’s Fort, Montana, a fire on Meredith Mountain burns through Labor Day weekend. It is a terrifying sight, leaving a trail of havoc and destruction in its wake. Alice Adams, editor of the Clark’s Fort Guardian, is determined to get the whole story with the help of her reporter nephew, Stuart Campbell. But when the fire is finally contained, the mop-up crew discover the burned body of a man under a fallen log. Suddenly Alice and Stuart have a new story to investigate.

It appears that the man died in the fire. But with no ID, and nobody able to identify the body, Alice and Stuart are determined to find out who the man was and what he was doing on Meredith Mountain. Could the stranger have been connected to the town’s growing opioid problem?
