Ph.D. St. Elmo Nauman Jr.

St. Elmo Nauman Jr., PhD, earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Chicago in 1954 and a Master of Divinity from the Berkeley Baptist Divinity School, now the Berkeley School of Theology, in 1957. He obtained an additional degree in 1959 from the Andover Newton Theological School in Massachusetts, and ten years later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Boston University. Prior to his retirement in 1985 and 1986, Dr. Nauman was a professor at Baylor University, drawing upon nearly twenty years of experience as a faculty member at Rutgers, the College of William & Mary, and the George Washington University. For his remarkable educational efforts, he was named Teacher of the Year by the College of William & Mary in 1980 and recipient of a Civic Award from the Iota Pi chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi in 1978. Additionally, Dr. Nauman was honorably ordained to ministry in 1957, going on to offer his religious services to the Alpine Community Church, Newport Congregational Church, Heritage Congregational Church of Berea, and Chelmsford St. Baptist Church.

Outside of his teaching and faith-based careers, Dr. Nauman served as a commander with the US Navy Reserve in Washington, DC, from 1973 to 1995. In 1991, he was a commander of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro before moving to Naval Air Station Lemoore in 1992. During his notable military career, Dr. Nauman was named a Navy Chaplain by the Military Chaplains Association. A prolific writer, he has authored Treasury of Philosophy, Fallacies and Logic: The Secret World of Evil Arguments, Dictionary of Asian Philosophies, Exorcism Through the Ages, Dictionary of American Philosophy, and The New Dictionary of Existentialism. Most recently, Dr. Nauman served as an asylum officer with the US Immigration and Naturalization Service from 1992 to 2001 and an expert witness in immigration court for Immigration Specialists from 2001 to 2004. A testament to his legacy, Dr. Nauman was featured in the seventieth edition of Who’s Who in America.
