Mohandas K. Gandhi

Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869–1948) was born in Porbandar, India, to a religious family. As a young man, Gandhi studied law and received his degree in England. He pursued his law practice in South Africa, where he first experimented with creating campaigns of civil disobedience and protest. After two decades in South Africa, Gandhi returned to India and became the leader of the Indian nationalist movement to fight for independence from the British Empire, spearheading nonviolent protests. He spent the rest of his life championing Indian independence and rights, and was assassinated at the age of seventy-eight.
