In 1946, ten-year-old Addie Mills lives in Clear River, Nebraska, with her solemn father and loving grandmother. Addie’s mother died when she was still a baby, but that doesn’t stop her from being a straight-A student. Besides school, Addie loves horses and painting and drawing; when she grows up, she wants to be a famous artist and study in Paris.
