It’s not looking good for Nancy and her friend, Helen Corning, when a thunderstorm overtakes their motorboat on the Twin Lakes and angry waves knock them overboard. Fortunately, they are swiftly saved by Laura Pendleton and her rowboat.

Befriending their rescuer, the girls learn that Laura’s mother has recently passed away. She has come to the area to meet her new guardians, but something about them seems off. Compelled to inspect Laura’s situation further, Nancy follows a series of strange clues to the cellar of a lakeside bungalow where she makes a startling discovery . . .
