Sarah Orne Jewett
Sarah Orne Jewett (1849–1909) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet. As a young adult, Jewett published short stories and vignettes about countryside and seaport life in numerous magazines. She wrote three novels, but is best known for her collection of vignettes The Country of Pointed Firs. Jewett’s career was cut short by a carriage accident and a series of strokes, but her sympathetic works continue to inspire naturalist writers.
