Living with Hitler

<div><B>This World War II memoir by a Nazi soldier details his unimaginable experience as a German prisoner-of-war in the Soviet Union.</B><BR />  <BR /> Lothar Hermann grew up in Bavaria, going through the RAD (Nazi Labor Service) before being conscripted into a Wehrmacht Mountain Division (the Gebirgsdivision) in 1940. He participated in Germany&rsquo;s advance through southern Ukraine in 1941 and, in 1944, was arrested in Romania while retreating to Germany. The Romanians passed him onto the Soviets, who placed him in a forced labor camp, where he watched two-thirds of prisoners around him die. In 1949, Herrmann was finally released to Germany and returned to Bavaria.<BR />  <BR /> Three million German troops were taken prisoner by the Red Army and around two-thirds of them survived to return to Germany in 1949 like Hermann, but their stories are little known. Klaus Willmann draws on interviews he conducted with Herrmann, to recount these astonishing recollections in the first-person. Depicting the challenges of growing up in Nazi Bavaria to becoming a Soviet prisoner-of-war, this is a gripping and enlightening account from a necessary but rarely explored perspective.</div>

Death March Through Russia

<div><P><B>The WWII memoir of a young German conscript who survived the Eastern Front and the sinking of the MV <I>Wilhelm Gustloff</I>.</B><BR /><BR /> Born in Munich in 1926, Hans Fackler was conscripted into the Wehrmacht at the age of seventeen. He became an infantryman on the brutal frontlines of the war in Russia. But after suffering a grievous injury from a grenade explosion, he could no longer fight.<BR /><BR /> Hans was given morphine onboard the controversial <I>Wilhelm Gustloff</I>, an armed military ship which operated under the guise of transporting civilians. When the ship was sunk by Russian torpedoes, drowning more than 9,000 passengers, Hans was among the lucky few rescued by a German freighter.<BR /><BR /> Hans recuperated in a military hospital near Erfurt in the Harz, which subsequently fell into the Russian zone. He escaped and undertook the arduous task of walking almost 200 miles back home to Bavaria. <I>Screams of the Drowning</I> is Hans&rsquo;s extraordinary first-person account of his wartime experiences, as told to Klaus Willmann. </P></div>

<div><B>A chilling memoir by the man who flew the F&uuml;hrer.</B><BR />  <BR /> A decorated First World War pilot, Hans Baur was one of the leading commercial aviators of the 1920s before being pitched into the thick of it as personal pilot to a certain &ldquo;Herr Hitler.&rdquo; Hitler, who loathed flying, felt safe with Baur and would allow no one else to pilot him. As a result, an intimate relationship developed between the two men and it is this which gives these memoirs special significance. Hitler relaxed in Baur&rsquo;s company and talked freely of his plans and of his real opinions about his friends and allies.<BR />  <BR /> Baur was also present during some of the most salient moments of the Third Reich; the R&ouml;hm Putsch, the advent of Eva Braun, Ribbentrop&rsquo;s journey to Moscow, the B&uuml;rgerbr&auml;ukeller attempt on Hitler&rsquo;s life; and, when war came, he flew Hitler from front to front. I Was Hitler's Pilot

He was one of the last to leave the bunker and was responsible for guarding the door while Hitler killed himself. During his years of service, Linge was responsible for all aspects of Hitler&rsquo;s household and was constantly by his side. He claims that only Eva Braun stood closer to Hitler during these years.<BR />  <BR /> Through a host of anecdotes and observations, Linge recounts the daily routine in Hitler&rsquo;s household: his eating habits, his foibles, his preferences, his sense of humor, and his private life with Braun. In fact, Linge believed Hitler&rsquo;s closest companion was his dog. His candid memoirs offer a unique eyewitness account of events leading up to and during the war, culminating in those dark final days in the F&uuml;hrer&rsquo;s headquarters, deep under the shattered city of Berlin.<BR />  <BR /> He begins by describing his duties as a member of Hitler&rsquo;s personal staff in the years preceding the war, driving the F&uuml;hrer throughout Germany and abroad, and accompanying him to rallies. The crux of his memoir, however, covers his life with Hitler in the Berlin F&uuml;hrerbunker. Crucially, Kempka witnessed Hitler&rsquo;s marriage to Eva Braun and his last dinner and personal farewell to all those present, before he and his wife committed suicide. Hitler&rsquo;s final order to Kempka was that he have ready enough petrol to burn him and his wife. Under constant Soviet artillery fire, Kempka, Linge, and others poured petrol over the bodies and burnt them.<BR />  <BR /> The account concludes with Kempka&rsquo;s hazardous escape out of a burning Berlin more than 800 kilometers through Allied-occupied Germany, his arrest, and interrogation before being sent to serve as a witness at Nuremburg.<BR />  </div>

I Was Hitler's Chauffeur

Schroeder&rsquo;s memoir delivers fascinating insights: she notes his bourgeois manners, his vehement abstemiousness, and his mood swings. Indeed, she was ostracized by Hitler for a number of months after she made the mistake of publicly contradicting him once too often.<BR />  <BR /> In addition to her portrayal of Hitler, there are illuminating anecdotes about Hitler&rsquo;s closest colleagues. She recalls, for instance, that the relationship between Martin Bormann and his brother Albert, who was on Hitler&rsquo;s personal staff, was so bad that the two would only communicate with one another via their respective adjutants, even if they were in the same room. There is also light shed on the peculiar personal life and insanity of Reichsminister Walther Darr&eacute;. Schroeder claims to have known nothing of the horrors of the Nazi regime. He Was My Chief

They have now been published in this memoir.&rdquo;&mdash;<I>Daily Express</I></B><BR />  <BR /> Heinrich Hoffman was a key part in the making of the Hitler legend, the photographer who carefully crafted the image of the Fuhrer as a godlike figure. Hoffmann published his first book of photographs in 1919, following his work as an official photographer for the German army. In 1920 he joined the Nazi Party, and his association with Hitler began. He became Hitler&rsquo;s official photographer and traveled with him extensively.<BR />  <BR /> He took over two million photographs of Hitler, and they were distributed widely, including on postage stamps, an enterprise that proved very profitable for both men. Hoffmann published several books on Hitler in the 1930s, including <I>The Hitler Nobody Knows</I> (1933). Hoffmann and Hitler were very close, and he acted not only as a personal confidante&mdash;his memoirs include rare details of the Fuhrer&mdash;but also as a matchmaker; it is Hoffmann who introduced Eva Braun, his studio assistant, to Hitler. There he served until the war&rsquo;s end as Hitler&rsquo;s bodyguard, courier, orderly, and, finally, as Chief of Communications.<BR />  <BR /> On the Berghoff terrace, he watched Eva Braun organize parties, observed Heinrich Himmler and Albert Speer, and monitored telephone conversations from Berlin to the East Prussian Headquarters on July 20, 1944&mdash;after the attempt on Hitler&rsquo;s life. As the Allied forces closed in, Misch was drawn into the F&uuml;hrerbunker with the last of the faithful. He remained in charge of the bunker switchboard as his duty required, even after Hitler committed suicide.<BR />  <BR /> Misch knew Hitler the private man. His memoirs offer an intimate view of life in close attendance to Hitler and of the endless hours deep inside the bunker. They also provide new insights into military events&mdash;such as Hitler&rsquo;s initial feeling that the 6th Army should pull out of Stalingrad.
