Philip MacDonald (1900–1980) was one of the most popular mystery writers of the thirties, penning over twenty-five novels. He served with the British cavalry in Mesopotamia during World War I, and later trained horses for the army. After moving to Hollywood in 1931 to become a screenwriter, he authored over twenty screenplays, and fifteen of his novels were made into film adaptations.
