In 1982, Connie Mack left a successful banking career to run for the House of Representatives, where he served three terms before running for one of Florida’ s seats in the US Senate. He served two terms there, then chose not to run for reelection or to accept George W. Bush’ s offer to be his running mate in 2000. On returning to the private sector, Mack became chairman and then chairman emeritus of the H. Lee Moffitt Comprehensive Cancer Center in Tampa. He and his wife, Priscilla, divide their time between Florida and Vermont. They have two children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Mack is the grandson, and namesake, of the Hall of Fame baseball figure who managed teams to major league records in both total wins and total losses. His grandfather on his mother’ s side, Morris Sheppard, served as a United States senator from Texas from 1913 until 1941.
